The Centre for Research and Enterprise in Language (CREL) at the University of Greenwich invites interested colleagues and students to join a workshop on linguistic research and statistical analysis.

Frequentist statistical analysis: foundational ideas and common mistakes

Dr Palacios (University of Greenwich) and Dr Wojtys(University of Plymouth), Lecturers in Statistics.

Wednesday 18 November 2020, 4-6pm You can join the workshop on Microsoft Teams by clicking here.

Abstract: Adherence to standards of rigor and transparency when performing statistical analyses in linguistic research is crucial in obtaining reliable and trustworthy results. In recent years, many systematic reviews pointed out a number of problems in this area such as experiments not being reproducible, statistical assumptions not being carefully checked or misinterpreting results of statistical procedures and drawing unjustifiable conclusions.

We will review concepts related to hypothesis testing (e.g., significance level, p-value, power, Type I and Type II errors) focusing on their meaning and interpretation. Statistical assumptions underlying hypothesis testing, common mistakes and misconceptions, examples involving analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear mixed models will be discussed.

Please distribute among colleagues and students at your end.

    Thanks!
