Title: UCL Outreach  projects with secondary schools, focusing on East European emerging communities and heritage speakers at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies

Abstract

Ramona presents two projects she initiated and completed in the past 4 years, that focused on East European languages and communities. The two projects covered the following languages: Romanian,  Albanian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Spanish and Portuguese.

Ramona will briefly present a UCL Changemaker project (a student- staff collaboration project) with year 1 BA heritage Romanian speaker students, looking at the Romanian cultural presence in several London museums. The scope was to combat stereotypes through culture.

Ramona Gonczol is Associate Professor in Romanian language studies at SSEES, UCL. She convenes the PROLang group and is also an academic coordinator for the Language Short Courses programme at SSEES.

She is the (co)author of Romanian an Essential Grammar (2nd edition, 2020) andColloquial Romanian (4th edition, 2014).

Her research interests lie in the area of language acquisition, heritage speakers, cultural identities, language policy, multilingualism and ethnographic pedagogy.

She is a member of the SIG for Heritage Home and Community Languages, run by Association for Language Learning.

Ramona is a fellow of the HEA and the recipient for the Romanian Order for Cultural Merit in Promoting Romanian Culture and Language Abroad (2018).
