Student Members

The LAGB devotes a large part of its income to supporting the activities of student members, and has a Student Committee to oversee this.

Aims

We aim to represent the student members of the LAGB, so please send us a message if you have any comments or issues you would like to raise! Our email address is lagbsc@gmail.com. For the full details of what the student committee will be responsible for, see our terms of reference.

The student committee of the LAGB (LAGBSC) was first formalised at the AGM during the LAGB meeting in Essex, September 2008. The LAGBSC maintains its own website, here, where further details can be found, including calls for postgraduate funds, blog posts, events etc. Current members of the LAGBSC are:

Student Conference Sponsorships

The LAGB Student Committee is pleased to offer a Best Student Abstract Award at the conference. The award for one winner includes:

  • Free conference registration
  • £50 prize money
  • Free conference dinner

Please note: this award does not cover travel or accommodation.

Bursaries for the Annual Meeting

A small number of bursaries are available to help unsalaried members of the Association (e.g. PhD students) to attend the Annual Meeting of the LAGB to present a paper. There are three types of bursaries available:

Best Student Abstract Bursary

The Best Student Abstract Bursary is awarded to the student member whose abstract was rated highest by our international peer review committee. The award includes:

  • Free registration for the entire conference
  • Conference dinner
  • Up to £250 reimbursement of accommodation costs
  • Up to £250 reimbursement for UK-internal travel costs to and from the conference

Presenter Bursary

Presenter Bursaries are available for student/unwaged members who have had an abstract selected for presentation at the conference. The award includes:

  • Free registration for the entire conference
  • Up to £250 expenses towards UK-internal travel costs to and from the conference and accommodation/subsistence

  • Attendance Bursary

    Attendance Bursaries are available for student/unwaged members who submitted an abstract that was unsuccessful in being selected for presentation at the conference. These awards are only made if sufficient funds are available after the Presenter Bursaries have been awarded. The award includes:

    • Free registration for the entire conference
    • Up to £100 expenses towards UK-internal travel costs to and from the conference and accommodation/subsistence

How to apply

While applicants for bursaries must be members of the Association, applications for membership may be submitted at the same time as applications for bursaries.

    • All abstracts should be submitted in the regular way, as detailed in the call for papers.
    • Members who also wish to apply for a bursary should email conference@lagb.org.uk to register their interest in a bursary from the email address they gave to the LAGB when joining the Association. Please tell us which bursar{y/ies} you would like to be considered for and whether you have access to additional funds, e.g. departmental travel scholarships.
    • Successful applicants will be notified by email before the end of July.
Apply for a Bursary
