Language and Linguistics: general field of descriptive and empirical linguistics including individual differences in language processing; aspects of second language speech acquisition and learning; and evolution of language and cognition in early humans or precursor species.

If you/ your contact have specific interests in aspects of second language speech, please feel free to contact myself for more information. For enquiries related to other areas, please follow instructions on the webpage.

    Best wishes,
    Alex

This PhD level project will involve an empirical investigation into aspects of second language speech and acquisition, focusing for example on the issues of intelligibility, comprehensibility and accentedness. The precise focus of study is dependent upon candidates’ specific interest and expertise and is open to negotiation. The study will incorporate quantitative and/ or qualitative methods to help explore how social and linguistic aspects of second language speech interact. It should also attempt to draw implications for communications that take place among multilinguals.

The successful candidate will undertake PhD level study, working in tandem with similar research currently being undertaken by Dr. Alex Ho-Cheong Leung, Dr. Robert McKenzie, and associated PhD students in the English Language & Linguistics group at Northumbria University. Her/his project will also contribute more broadly to research carried out in the Institute of Humanities at Northumbria in the areas of mobility, diasporas and borders.

    See: https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/humanities/research/english-research/english-language-and-linguistics/

It is expected that candidates will have a background in areas related to Second language speech acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Second language learning and pedagogy, Linguistics, Education, Sociolinguistics and/ or Psychology.
