‘Lang/Lit From A to BA: A Higher Education Academy workshop on Lang/Lit work at school and at university’

Hendon Campus, Middlesex University, 10am-4pm, 7 July 2012

Organised by Billy Clark (Middlesex University) and Andrea Macrae (Oxford Brookes University)

Participation is free but attendance must be confirmed in advance. To book a place or to ask for further information, contact Billy Clark:
    b.clark@mdx.ac.uk

    Summary:
This workshop aims to explore lang/lit provision at school and at university, and to consider issues around the transition from work at A level to work on BA programmes. The workshop will develop understanding of activities in both sectors. It will also explore student needs and expectations, and generate ideas for how to meet them.

The day will consist of a number of sessions led by speakers who will include A Level examiners, university academics, teachers and students who have worked on lang/lit in both contexts. The sessions will be interactive with opportunities for all participants to contribute, including round table style discussions, and 'hands-on' work exploring classroom activities.

Topics which will be discussed include:

    - school and university uptake of courses
(including a national overview and discussion of issues around availability, popularity, obstacles and opportunities)

    - lang/lit at school and at university
(kinds of activities, similarities and differences)

    - student expectations and reflections
(what do students make of lang/lit work in both contexts? To what extent is the integration of language and literature successful?)

    - ideas for future developments
    (marketing and meeting student needs)

Further details will be available soon.

Billy Clark (b.clark@madx.ac.uk) and Andrea Macrae (andrea.macrae@brookes.ac.uk)
